Thanks for all the valuable info. However, I don't see any gear restrictions for mussels in the DFG's 2009-2010 marine regs. I do frequently see folks with well more than the 10# limit & no visible license, though.

Just out of curiousity, how do you clean/prep the gooseneck barnacles that occur so commonly with the mussels? I believe I saw an episode where Tony Bordain or Andrew Zimmer ate a portion of them while somewhere in Spain but am not certain.

I guess my main concern is that I'd hate to find out a new edible is actually toxic by trial and error...


A game warden once told me he had seen people taking goose barnacles. I believe he said that the fleshy "goose neck" was the edible portion. If you've ever inspected a goose barnacle you will see that although it looks like a mollusk it is in fact an arthropod. This is of course the case with all barnacles. But goose barnacles look especially mollusk like. Crack open the shell and you will see a small creature that looks kind of like a shrimp. I would imagine the neck of a goose barnacle would have to be pulverized sufficiently to allow for chewing. I would also add that they are very efficient filter feeders so you'd want to heed the warnings from yesterday's post.

BTW: Turban snails are picked out of the shell and eaten raw--or pounded, flash cooked, and added to a meal with other seafoody things.
